Thanks!
Thanks everyone for coming and making it a really lively and different space last night at the Pecha Kucha event - bubbling away until closing time. It was great to have the input of bITjAM and the documentation of Inpsired Films and Iconic Images. Also the brave presenters on this first night with a fascinating range of approaches from Anglo-Saxon windows to Hang music. The SpeedMeet was chaotically hilarious, all in 6mins 40 secs, so a collective pecha kucha!
Can't forget Fat Cat and Steve for their support in providing a great venue and bar. Lots to build on so look out for the next event; we have the agreement to hold 4 events a year so all you out there with ideas or stories, start thinking - it's a unique format that has the trick of surprising yourself with what you can do with it. Photos and film to follow via Facebook and Blurb.....

Pecha Kucha tonight!
6th Nov 2009
First Stoke-on-Trent Pecha Kucha Night coming up! Come and join us on Fri 13th Nov
for some great presentations, funky sound and zany short films. Starts at 7 - 9pm and onwards
with own bar and free entry at Fat Cat Cafe & Bar, Trinity Street, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent.
What is Pecha Kucha?
Pecha Kucha (pronounced “pa-chok-cha” http://www.pecha-kucha.org )is an entertaining way to exchange ideas and experience. The aim is to get people from different walks of life and experience talking to each other in a way that is original, funny, unusual, serious or just different.
Using 20 images in total and a time of 20 seconds per image your presentation is then 6 mins 40 secs.
The format was devised and copyrighted by Royal College of Art architecture graduates Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein, working from their multi-disciplined arts business base in Tokyo, originally as a way of getting art and design professionals talking to each other in a focused and inventive way. The idea has spread virally to many different walks of life and many city events have been held around the world.
Stoke-on-Tent becomes the first city in the West Midlands to win permission to hold a programme of Pecha Kucha Nights. This initiative came out of an alliance of two locally based projects, Headtalk, http://www.headtalk.org.uk/ , a project out of AirSpace, http://airspacegallery.org/ †, and Blurb, http://blurbonline.ning.com/. Both these projects are focused on exchange and networking amongst arts people and equally the promotion of dialogue between the arts and other social groupings or communities in Stoke-on-Trent and regionally. We believe the introduction of the Pecha Kucha format to the city is an exciting and effective way to pursue these aims.

Hi all, Well the Stoke Pecha Kucha night, the first in the West Midlands may I remind you, came a step closer to realisation this week (Tuesday 4th August) when the dummy run took place at Fat Cats Hanley. The evening didn't go without its hitches but then, one of the reasons for this dry run, was to highlight any possible problems that might occur, so they can be addressed before November comes. There was a last minute scurry of activity once we had gained access to the room to ensure everything was ready and it then became apparent that certain aspects like the small size of the projection screen for example, was ok for this event, but needed to be larger for the main event.
Eight presentations were planned, but Chris of Culturing Stuff had to pull out due to difficulties in loading his images on to the pecha kucha template .... another problem to be resolved! So that left 7 presentations which were in order of appearance: 1 Brian Holdcroft, 2 Tony Jones, 3 Glen Stoker, 4 Anna Francis, 5 Mark Brereton, 6 Paul Bishop, 7 Bernard Charnley.
The content and or approach of each contributer gave those that attended, and there were about twenty eight in total, a glimpse at the exciting possibilities that this format offers.
Overall the evening was a real success and there were some encouraging comments made in support of this .... Bring on the real thing!!!

See you there for all the fun
July 22nd 2009
Dear All,
We are so excited about the prospect of hosting Stoke-on-Trent's Pecha Kucha night - and so we are holding a Pecha Kucha dummy run on Tuesday, August 4th in Fat cats Hanley (lower large room) as the next Fringe event.
We are keen to try everything out and would love to give people the opportunity to do the same - so if you fancy taking one of the Pecha Kuch dummy run slots and doing a 6 minute and 40 second presentation in the pecha kucha style then just let us know, and get us your 20 slides by the week before - so we can do the necessaries. No need for polished presentations – the idea is to try the format out and have some fun as well. Check out our Pecha Kucha Facebook site: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=141332306608&ref=ts (copy and insert in address bar)
We need all interested parties to send us over their 20 slides by 5pm Tuesday, 28th July. send to stokepechakucha@yahoo.co.uk
RSVP to let us know if you are planning on doing a presentation for the dummy run or just fancy coming along to watch the fun.
Look forward to seeing you all there,
from the Pecha Kucha Stoke team

Hi All,
Announcing the dummy run for the upcoming Pecha Kucha event (click on image) being staged by Blurb and HeadTalk. Having won the right to stage the first event of its kind in the Midlands, we are getting things moving with an experimental try-out at the next Fringe on Tuesday 4th August at Fat Cats, Hanley, a friendly and welcoming place- come along and join the fun.
July 10th 2009
If anyone had any fears that because July 5th HeadTalk Fringe, which was only the third one, may have struggled to gain any significance with the local creative fraternity ; then their fears would have been quickly allayed as the evening got off to a very positive start with Anna Francis presenting a general overview of the "Antifreeze " and the individual AirSpace artists that participated giving their own take on this Manchester based event.
Darren Washington then followed with a personal presentation of his photography covering a number of projects he has been involved with and answering any questions that were raised concerning his practice.
A quick break to fill glasses etc then things carried on with Mark Brereton revealing his very recent success in getting the position to oversee the proposed creative networking site for Stoke-on-Trent City Council . I feel the general consensus was that Mark's input will be invaluable to the project and his resistence to simply conform will challenge all those involved. At this point we had exceeded our agreed finishing time but we had the Pecha Kucha to cover. A decision was made to hold the dry run in the larger room at Fat Cats where the main event will take place. It is intended that each attendee to the Fringe can ,if they wish, do a Pecha Kucha presentation ....sounds great - bring on August 4th!
July 5th
The July Fringe will be taking place this Tuesday, 7th July, 7-9pm
We will be back in our second home, Fat Cats on Tuesday to discuss the Midlands first ever Pecha-Kucha night - developments since last Fringe. We will also be discussing the Antifreeze art car boot fair that some of us went to on Saturday - which has raised some interesting points in relation to value systems and the worth of art. That is the shape of things so far, but we want to encourage anyone to bring along anything that they would like to talk about - we will have a projector and laptop with us, so if you have a presentation that you would like to show, or a film, or some images, then bring them on a disk or pen drive, and we will stick them up on the big screen.
Hope to see you there on Tuesday.
June 2nd 2009
The Next Fringe - scheduled for tomorrow: night (Tuesday, June 2nd 7-9pm)
Here we go, here we go - roll up for the second monthly HeadTalk Fringe at
Fat Cats, Stoke-on-Trent (with a bar and off-street parking) . Pecha Kucha has been in the air and two short art pecha kucha videos will be shown along with any other stuff people would like to show, mention, talk about. Stoke is bubbling with all kinds of arts activity, the Photographer Collective and Culturing Stuff being recent additions, so if you would like to share what you are doing in a relaxed setting feel welcome to drop in.
Fringe is the chill version of HeadTalk Forum cool, originating fromAirSpace studio artists, where artists and creative people can meet in an informal way and exchange on practice and any other stuff of interest. The aim is to promote networking face-to-face in Stoke-on-Trent, working alongside the online Blurb site. If you have anything that needs a projection or other facility,
just let us know at info@headtalk.org
8th May 2009
First Fringe!
The inaugural meeting of the Fringe strand of HeadTalk took place at the welcoming Fat Cats on Tuesday. It was a bit like a staged happening, with people coming in at different times, different kinds of exchange; new faces and a friendly bar to help us along. As the aim of this first meet was to see what ideas came up about this informal kind of get together, the discussion was varied and seemed to pick up speed the later it got, with some of us stumbling out at closing time and even trying out each others coats (or one of us anyway)… Here are some ideas and thoughts that came up:
General stuff :
-Meet up first Tuesday of the month
-Outings to art events
When we meet :
- Feel free to bring an item of work, idea or event news to share or get feedback on. With bringing work, the idea is not to have some kind of militant critique, but more a supportive reaction, comment or enquiry from different perspectives, which has its own kind of value.
- inject a game element with an art dimension into the mix with a great suggestion from Mark (Brereton) of ……(Japanese name) that was designed as an anti waffle device. We can try that out at the next Fringe.
-get ideas for the Forum strand, which meets to unpack a question or issue. One subject that came up were the compromises artists have to make and how we deal with them and this may be the next topic for the Forum.
There was agreement that a point of exchange (or more than one, as there is also a Blurb forum) or informal hub of this kind was valuable and needed, complementing the Blurb networking site with face to face.
Info on the next Fringe or Forum can be accessed at www.headtalk.org.uk
21st April 2009
The first HeadTalk Fringe is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5th 2009 - 7-9pm at Fat Cats, Trinity Street, Stoke-on-Trent, ST1 1HJ. CLICK HERE FOR MAP
HeadTalk Fringe is an opportunity for artists to meet up and discuss issues and concerns arising from contemporary practice.
The Fringe is an informal discussion space, where no set agenda is agreed prior to the evening. This allows a creative space for participants to bring along any ideas which they wish to explore with others artists, current work, details about a recent trip or just themselves, to share with the group.
The Fringe is intended as a space for artists to network, gain feedback on current projects, explore ideas and generally provide a support system for practising artists within Stoke-on-Trent. Anyone can bring anything to the discussion.
Please R.S.V.P. to info@headtalk.org.uk so that we have an idea on numbers.
We hope to see you there!
5 April 2009
This is our new site….welcome back!
HeadTalk is spreading its wings a bit with a new development which we hope will widen engagement. This is Headtalk Fringe, where people can come along to chat about practice, bring things to show and get to know other artists or arts people. HeadTalk Forum continues with its focus on a chosen issue where everyone is welcome to chip in. Have a look at the About page for more on how it all started.
More good news is that artist Anna Francis is now a member of the HeadTalk team and is initiating the Fringe strand. We have decided to hold these on the first Tuesday of each month, with a HeadTalk forum slotting into a Tuesday every 2 to 3 months.
Keep an eye on the Blog and Facebook for details coming up shortly…..
